On Saturday the 12th of November 2022, at the premises of the Ivory Coast Community of Greece we held an open discussion on the issue of the regularization of undocumented migrants in Greece,

inviting leaders from the communities of Congo Kinshasa, Congo Brazzaville and the Ivory Coast along with personalities from Civil Services and NGOs.

The Greek Forum of Refugees’ Self-Advocacy Team in cooperation with the Ivory Coast Community of Greece and with the support of the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants has engaged in a series of online raising awareness -open discussions- regarding undeclared labour and how it affects undocumented migrants. These two online sessions delivered the same number of reports with essential feedback on what is happening in Greece regarding the issue of undeclared labour (follow this link).

In this 3rd session we discussed issues that undocumented migrants face with the regularization procedures in Greece; an issue very closely related with undeclared labour. This final Open discussion provided us with valuable information on regularization that will be included in our future report. Our next step is to engage in a campaign for policy change that will introduce fundamental elements by combining our findings on undeclared labour along with those on regularization.

by Mahdia Hossaini

I am full of anger these days. These days are strangely difficult. These days, all my thoughts are in my birthplace (Iran) and my parents’ hometown (Afghanistan). Sometimes I cry for the Afghan girls who were killed on the way to their school. These days I think about the revolution. I believe that the next revolution that will shake history will be the women’s revolution. It doesn’t matter if it’s this year, next year, or another. But it will be the women who will turn the page of this era.

It will be these women who will join hands all over the globe and take steps for the betterment of the world. This time I wanted to write for the Hazara girls. For those whom the Taliban are afraid of. Because the Taliban are afraid of their knowledge. Every time they introduced themselves as Afghans, they were met with suspicious looks from Europeans, because their almond eyes reminded them of the people of Korea, Japan, and China. The Hazara girls that were my classmates in Iran, they were always discriminated against because, according to the Iranians, they could easily be identified as Afghans.

I am writing for Fatima Peyman, who is one of the senators of the Australian Senate. I am writing for Zahra, whose photography works were published in the American magazine “National Geographic”. For Nilo, whose first filming experience was a success. I am writing for Masoumeh, who loves writing. For Razia, who is angry at all these daily injustices. I am writing for Kaj Educational Institute, which was attacked on September 30, 2022 and destroyed by the enemies of knowledge and awareness. Their crime was that the students were from the Hazara ethnic minority, Shiite religious minority and because of their thirst for knowledge. I am writing for Marzieh; how much her dream is similar to mine. For Marzieh, who loved the books of Turkish author Elif Shafak. For her, as she wanted to be a writer. I am writing for Hajar, who wanted to become an engineer to rebuild her homeland. I am writing for the courage of a girl who went to Kaj Institute the day after the suicide bombing, and left flowers on the empty, broken and bloodied school desks of her classmates. I write for my best friends, for Tahereh, for Pari…

I write their names, they are not numbers. They are human beings. I write for them because no one has cut their hair for them. I write for them, because the BBC didn’t bother to write. Because CNN did not write. Because the New York Times did not write. Because Kasemirini did not write. Because EFSYN did notwrite.

I am writing because of this poem by Saadi, a night lullaby that I grew up with and I believe in it.

Human beings are members of a whole,

in creation of one essence and soul.

If one member is afflicted with pain,

Other members uneasy will remain.

If you have no sympathy for human pain,

the name of a human you cannot retain.

So that we never forget the difference between Hazara and Sayyid, the difference between Afghans, Tajik and Pashto. Or the ones who were born in Kabul or Herat. So that we never forget how different it is to be Shia compared to Sunni.

They made us not to forget who we can marry or who to fall in love with. We have to pay attention to these differences. Years passed, and Afghanistan, except for a country that is always associated with morbid and painful news, killings, and war -an existence that you have heard about at least once in your life- it literally has no other meaning.

Some people migrated and saw the pain of racism and alienation once more in foreign lands. Others continued their life full of pain through restrictions, war and bombardment. The aroma of “unity” never reached the nose of this nation’s inhabitants! Only the aforementioned instructions of division along with filthy and false hatred.

Today, this is the reality of our country. This is how blood is drawn and our innocent fellow citizens are killed by certain people… This is how they take away their right to life… Our daughters and our sisters are prisoners of the lustful and dirty thoughts and actions of the Taliban. Living in constant fear until one day they die casually in their schools.

Now we, the new generation and Afghan youth, as we all look in shock at our aching hearts, we shed tears. We see our anger and we forget all the hateful nighttime stories of our fathers and as we are mourning, the pain is burning our throats.

We clench our fists and shout together “That’s enough!”. We all know that enough is enough of these pointless differences. Being either Hazara or Sayyid or Tajik… This perpetual distance and differences; This silence mixed with racist views… We all want unity and freedom. We all want the end of the genocides. We all want the right to education for our sisters. We all want a prosperous Afghanistan. We all want a homeland…

By Mahdia Hossaini

Mother: You will be free. You can wear whatever you want. No one is going to hurt you for reading. Or tell you what to think, or who to love. Or what to believe in. You don’t have to be a wife. Or mother if you don’t want to!

Girl: So, who can I be?

Mother: You!

(Part of the conversation between mother and daughter in the Movie “The handmaid’s tale”)

Last week on Friday 16/09/2022, a girl in Iran was killed by the “Morality Police” because her hijab was not worn in a correct and complete fashion, in their opinion. She was being herself, but the cost of being herself was to lose her life. Since Friday, the streets of Iran are full of women, girls and men who are fighting for freedom. Listen, can you hear them screaming?

Woman, life, freedom. Woman, life, freedom. This is their motto.

Girls in that part of the world, who maybe you had not even heard of until a few days ago, have started to cut their hair and shave their head. They want to show the depth of pain and sadness inside them. They need our help. They want us to support them. It may be a little difficult for you to understand how it can be possible that in 2022 a girl died because of her hijab. But I was born in that land. I also experienced these fears. My sisters and I got weak in the knees every time we saw the “Morality Police”. We also got a cold sweat from fear on our bodies. Do you know why? Because our crime was twofold. We were refugees in that country, and we did not dress according to their wishes.

Now I want to be their voice on this side of the world. Their voice is the voice of freedom. The voice of equality and human rights. I stand with them. Even if I choose to wear a hijab on my head, I stand by their right not to wear one. I stand not only with them but with all those who fight for equal rights. These rights can be the right to abortion in America, the fight for not accepting police officers in Greek universities, or the fight for the right to education for Afghan girls.

I am a woman who was born in Iran, in an Afghan family. My parents taught me the right to choose. In my family I am the only daughter who wears a hijab because I choose to wear it, my choice, there is no sense of pressure on that subject for us.

There is an opposite of course…. Let’s not forget in 2022 in Europe and the USA, we still have Muslim Women who aren’t allowed to wear their hijab or face discrimination because they wear them. So, let’s stand by each other’s side and hand to hand fight for equality and human rights.

We women are the ones who can bring positive change in our societies. We are the ones giving birth to men and we should teach our children to respect human rights and be the voice of the voiceless regardless of religion, race, nationality.

We will be free……

Now I wake up to the sound of bombs. My body shivers, but I have to be strong. Every day I imagine Afghan, Syrian and Middle Eastern women thinking about all these years as if the world is used to being in war. Everyone is talking about leaving these days. Women and children should go to safe places but, I shout, where in the world can one find a safer place than their own home?

The images of Middle Eastern & African women is painted in front of my eyes again, the same women that no one welcomed when they arrived in Europe. No one talked about the beauty and colour of their eyes. No one talked about their courage and strength. I understand these women better than anyone, just as they understand me and the women of Ukraine better than anyone.

I put on my military uniform and shout that I will fight alongside the men. I put white flowers on my braided hair because I want to have a sign of peace on me when I go to war and march on to the war of inequalities, injustices, ugliness, and dictators.

And I am sure that you, women all over the world, know that we celebrate women’s day because our presence makes the world a better place.

Jawad Jafari

Today, December 10, coincides with International Human Rights Day. There have been many announcements and conferences around the world about the International Human Rights Day but, unfortunately, these events have more of a publicity aspect and their impact in practice is very small.

In many cases, like Afghanistan for example, it is the opposite. In previous years, human rights in Afghanistan were poorly respected, but now, with the Taliban taking power, these rights have been completely abolished. However, in more developed countries, human rights for refugees are also partially respected.

The first principle of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. But as an Afghan refugee who has lived in Iran, Turkey and Greece, I say that regarding human rights there is very little room for refugees in these countries.

Article 5 of the Declaration states: “No one shall be subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment”. In Iran, however, Afghan refugees are treated contrary to this principle. Article 26 of the Declaration states: “Everyone has the right to education”. But our children in Greece are facing great difficulties in attending school.

Freedom and equality for everyone despite their colour, race and gender, the right to freedom of thought, the right to freedom of expression and the right to choose one’s religion, according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are the rights extended to all human beings. The bombings in Afghanistan are more about one religion and one race, and they want everything that deviates from this view to be completely destroyed.

Basic rights, housing, health insurance, the right to education are poorly respected in Greece and in the camps. On the islands, refugees still live in tents. At this time when we are all fatigued by the pandemic and want to get rid of the virus as soon as possible in order to return to normal life, there are still refugees who do not have an insurance number and can not be vaccinated. There are still refugees who live in confined spaces by the dozens, not being able to hold social distancing solely because it is not feasible.

In your opinion, are human rights respected around the globe?

Mahdia Hossaini

I’m a woman. The one who after twenty years of running, trying, listening to sarcasm and insults, has reached a stage where I could take steps forward, but suddenly the enemy re-appeared.

I am the one who wanted to make my country prosperous. I am the one who studied by candlelight in the black-out nights of Kabul. Yes, I am the one who the Taliban started searching for, house to house, door to door. I am the one who crawled in a corner of the house and waited. Maybe I’m waiting for a miracle. I’m waiting to open the door for them every time I hear a knock on my door. I have imagined these scenes in my mind many times,…what would I say or do if I open that door. I have more than often imagined slapping them in the face. Or tell them about the hardships I have endured to this day and imagine them drinking their tea and listening to me. Sometimes I think they take me by my hair and drag me from one street to another. To provide a lesson to the others. Another one of my mental pictures was that I was married to one of them, but I was able to change his mindset and turn him into a man who is a defender of women and human rights. I do not know what to do but I am sure that I will not escape from them. I am positive that I will shout at them and will not bow down in front of them. Maybe they‘ll silence my voice from the first shout. Everything is unclear and it is my disturbed mind that weaves these fantasies. I have been hoping for the progress of Afghanistan (my motherland) for many years., And everything you read above was born of my mind. The mind of a girl who was born to Afghan parents but has never seen or lived in Afghanistan.

Yes, these are the creations of Mahdia’s mind. Situations that I imagined in fleeting moments, instead of the reality of the girl who now lives in Afghanistan. Faces. Fear has taken over a corner of my heart. I have curled up in the corner of the bed, holding my knees in my arms, and an imperceptible tremor has taken over my whole being. What have these savages done to us even now that I am miles away from them? Just by reading the news, fear and panic penetrate my soul. What have they done to my mother who, after dozens of deportations, is still in a state of fear, as she contacts me now and asks me not to write about the Taliban and their savagery when she is miles away from Afghanistan and still afraid?

This fear has been with her for years. What have they done to our women and girls? We all know that the world of politics is not a straightforward and reliable world. Everything is written like a movie before its script. How can these strange men, as if they have come out of the Stone Age and thrown into Afghanistan these last few decades, managed to dominate the country? Men with guns who, like children, enjoy an afternoon in the amusement park or kick the ground out of joy when they see the gym. Who are they and where were they raised and educated?
